Landmarks / History
Construction began on Battery Park in the late 1970s, so you won’t
find a lot of old, venerated architecture. You will find Stuyvesant
High School, the World Financial Center and the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
Battery Park began life as a blank slate: a 30-plus acre man-made
peninsula built with construction landfill in the 1960s. Managed by
a public interest corporation, the planned neighborhood grew to become
one of Lower Manhattan’s most livable spots, with mixed use buildings,
plenty of parks and excellent public schools.
Area Scene
Many people classify Battery Park as curiously suburban, and for good
reason. Its great apartments and schools attract many young families,
and its recent architecture and large shopping malls set it apart from
Manhattan’s standard urbanity. However, cultural events at the
World Financial Center and the Esplanade make Battery Park a happening
place.
