Landmarks / History
Clinton was originally populated by Irish laborers during the mid-1800s,
who found work on the loading docks or the nearby 11th Street rail line.
Hardscrabble conditions led to the rise of gangs, and the neighborhood
became known for organized crime and violence, a trend that would continue
for more than a century. In the 1950s, large Puerto Rican communities
moved into the area, prompting the cultural conflict that inspired the
hit musical West Side Story. By the 1980s, criminal convictions quelled
organized crime in the area, opening up the neighborhood for revitalization
and repopulation by young professionals, actors and artists. Today it
is a mix of old and new, with residents of all ages, backgrounds and
professions.
Notable landmarks include Windermere, an embattled 100+ year-old apartment building at 57th St. and 9th Ave., Madison Square Garden and the Actors’ Studio.
